When Should Kids Have Their First Dental Appointment?

Many people think that, until you’ve got a full set of teeth, you don’t need to see the dentist; but that’s not true. Your child should see a dentist within 6 months of the debut of their first tooth, or once they’ve reached 12 months of age; whichever happens first.

After their first appointment, kids should see a dentist for a cleaning and an exam every 6 months.

Why Do Kids Need Dental Exams at Such a Young Age?

Baby Teeth are Important

Just because your child’s baby teeth aren’t permanent doesn’t mean they don’t need maintenance. Most kids don’t lose all their baby teeth until they’re 12 or 13, so although they may not exactly be permanent, they do need to last a long time.

Without treatment, a cavity in a baby tooth can continue to decay; resulting in eventual removal, which could affect how their adult teeth grow in.

It’s Never too Early to Teach Good Oral Hygiene

We don’t just tend to your kids’ teeth; we tend to their minds! Part of our job is to teach your kids how valuable their teeth are and how important it is to care for them. We’ll make sure your child knows the correct techniques when brushing and flossing, and what foods or drinks could have a negative impact on their teeth. Most importantly, we’ll show them how great they look with a smile on their face.

Whether it’s your child’s first time or tenth time, sitting in the dentist’s chair can be intimidating. We’ll do everything we can to make them feel confident and comfortable in our office. Here are a few tricks you could try to help:

  • Play dentist at home! Take turns looking at each other’s teeth, using toothbrushes as pretend instruments.
  • Lead by example. Book an appointment for yourself shortly before your child’s. Bring them along so they can see that a dental appointment can be a fun and rewarding experience.
  • Tell your kids what to expect. Nothing seems as scary once it’s a little bit more familiar.
  • Use strategic timing. You know what time of day your child is calm, hyper, or cranky. Try to book your appointment during a time of day when they’re most well-rested and easy going.

We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable in our office, no matter how old they are. Our friendly staff will go out of their way to make sure your child feels valued, important, and understood. We’ll treat your child like a friend, doing everything we can to make their experience with us a positive one.
