When & Why Should I Have My Teeth Cleaned?

Cleanings Help Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is very common and can become very serious… affecting gum tissue and bone health, and potentially even resulting in heart problems or strokes. Regular professional cleanings (as well as a solid home oral hygiene routine) can help stop this disease before it ever starts.

Come in for a Cleaning Every 6 Months

We recommend having your teeth professionally cleaned every six months. This not only reduces the amount of plaque calcifying on your teeth; it also allows us monitor your overall oral health. By coming in for a check-up and hygiene treatment on a regular basis, we can not only prevent potential problems… we may be able to catch them before they become too serious.

What to Expect From a Cleaning

Typically, we’ll start by scraping the calcified plaque from around the gum line. After rinsing this away, we’ll polish and floss your teeth. This leaves a smoother surface behind, making it more difficult for plaque to accumulate. We may also administer a fluoride treatment, making your teeth more resistant to acidic foods and drinks.

Keeping Your Mouth Healthy at Home

Here are some of the things you should be doing on a daily basis in between your professional cleanings.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Floss at least once a day. Getting rid of the food pieces stuck between your teeth eliminates plaque, helps prevent decay and avoid bad breath.
  • Don’t forget your tongue! Give your tongue a special bit of attention when brushing your teeth.
  • Make sure you brush for at least 2 minutes every time. Cover every surface and make sure you clean each individual tooth.
  • Pick the right toothbrush. Kids have very fragile gum tissue, so it’s best they use a brush with rounded bristles. Electric toothbrushes are a good choice for anyone.
